Urban Habitats

Insulating and extending the life of a commercial flat roofed building with a living roof, pond and viewing deck at Manchester’s Unicorn Grocery in Chorlton solved the problem of an inefficient building and created a unique urban wildlife habitat. See how we did it and how it has grown by viewing Austin Clare’s amazing time lapse film http://www.unicorn-grocery.co.uk/video.php.

Funded by English Nature and the North West development Agency, this roof habitat was designed and built by us to extend feeding and nesting opportunities to support the existing Black Redstart pairs breeding in Manchester’s city centre. It also provides a rooftop retreat for workers and visitors at Bridge 5 Mill, Manchester’s Centre for Sustainable Living.
